Did you know that there is a correct and incorrect way of trimming your trees? Proper pruning cuts allow the tree to heal correctly and if small enough, completely encompass the “wound” or cut. To prevent tearing of the tree’s protective bark, it is recommended to use the 3-cut method. Another critical issue is not removing more than 25 percent of the trees overall canopy and foliage in a single year. It is also important to keep up on removal of dead and damaged trees. In addition to being a hazard, these dead and damaged trees attract unwanted pests and diseases. These all are especially important when it comes to the longevity of your tree.
Most tree trimming here in North Texas is recommended during the dormant season (winter) but sometimes depends on the species of tree. Trimming during this time frame reduces stress and lowers the risk of pests. It also gives the tree time to heal before using energy for spring new growth.
Sometimes spring storms here bring strong winds and cause damage to your trees. Generally this requires a professional arborist to assess and remove safety hazards. It is always a good idea to seek advice when dealing with these storm clean up tree concerns.
Regular inspections on your trees can help you recognize when it is time to reach out for professional advice. If you are unsure when to trim or how often you should trim, we encourage you to reach out to our Certified Arborist to give you peace of mind and ensure the job is done correctly.
